How to make a complaint that gets results
Most complaints are best resolved by contacting the organisation directly first and giving it a fair chance to put things right. Explain clearly what went wrong, what you want done, and by when, and keep a written record of your contact and any reference numbers.
If you cannot reach a resolution, you usually do not have to stop there. Many sectors – including energy, water, financial services, telecoms and property – have a free, independent ombudsman or alternative dispute resolution scheme that can review your case, and its decision is typically binding on the business if you accept it. Regulators such as Ofgem, Ofwat or the FCA set the rules for their sectors but do not usually handle individual complaints – the relevant ombudsman does. Use the directory below to find the right organisation, regulator or ombudsman for your situation.
