Types of ECO Grants

ECO (Energy Company Obligation) is the primary programme for assisting low-income and vulnerable households with energy efficiency improvements such as insulation and heating upgrades.

The energy company obligation (ECO) is a government-run energy efficiency scheme designed to help reduce fuel poverty and carbon emissions.

Examples of home improvements available through the grants available are:

• Boiler Replacement
• New heating technologies, including heat pumps and storage heaters
• Internal Wall Insulation
• Cavity Wall Insulation
• External Wall Insulation
• Solar panels

If you receive means tested benefits or satisfy other requirements, such as having a household income below £31,000 per year, or suffering from a health condition worsened by the cold, you may qualify for ECO.
Means tested benefits include:

• Income based job seekers allowance
• Income related employment and support allowance
• Income support
• Pension credit guarantee credit
• Working tax credit
• Child tax credit
• Universal Credit
• Housing benefit

If you are eligible for funding, Consumer Rights CIC will arrange for a government approved installer to visit your property and do an assessment. During this they will assess which upgrades are most suitable to your home.

These upgrades can include:

• Loft insulation
• Wall insulation
• A new boiler
• Solar panels

Loft insulation is a layer of material placed in your home’s roof to help conceal your home’s heat. This barrier can be placed either between the rafters or the joints. Loft insulation allows high-energy-cost households to reduce their energy bills annually, and by getting loft insulation via a government grant, it will not cost them a penny to do so.

Cavity wall insulation is insulation that is installed into the cavity of a building. This helps to trap heat inside, and keep cold air out. Most homes built after 1920’s have cavity walls, and may require this insulation. Cavity wall insulation involves injecting beads into the cavity of the wall through holes on the external wall, which are afterwards filled up.

Through the boiler upgrade scheme, as well as ECO4, you are able to get a funded low-carbon heating systems in your property. The boiler grant available is to help with the cost of installing a new boiler. This grant can provide up to  £5,000  worth of funding per household. Upgrading your boiler could save you up to  £580 a year.

EWI, or external wall insulation, is a form-fitted outside your home. Internal wall insulation gets fitted inside of your walls around the home. The grants available for this type of insulation include both ECO4 and GBIS.

Through the new ECO4 scheme, the government has allocated £4 billion to install solar panels across the UK. Solar panels are another way homes or buildings can access electricity without the additional cost of ordinary electricity. Solar panels can soak up solar energy, producing energy in and around your home. Installing solar panels could save you up to  £330 a year, and with the rising cost of living, this is a significant step to take, having your home upgraded and money saved without costing you a penny.
