Loft insulation costs between £400 and £1,200 to install in the average home and should pay for itself many times over its 40–year lifespan, making it a worthwhile investment in light of the current energy crisis.

Installing loft insulation is a good starting point because it is one of the simplest, least expensive, and most effective measures. It is one of the measures that must be in place before other energy-saving installations, such as heat pumps, can be implemented.  Most people are familiar with loft insulation, partly because they may have received unsolicited phone calls, which is probably not the best introduction. Among the numerous methods for insulating lofts or roofs, most employ traditional loft insulation above the top floor’s ceiling, which is often a do-it-yourself project.

If your attic is inaccessible, it can still be insulated with blown insulation by a professional, who will use specialised equipment to blow insulation material such as mineral wool fibre or treated cellulose into any awkward space. Flat roofs should ideally be insulated from above, with an insulation board added on top of the roof’s weatherproof layer or directly on top of the timber roof surface, followed by a new weatherproof layer.  To comply with building codes, you must insulate a flat roof that requires replacement.
