Today marks the launch of the UK Business Climate Hub, which includes a free carbon calculator and a suite of new tools to help businesses measure, monitor, and report on their emissions and save money using less energy. It provides comprehensive guidance on everything from sourcing products from green suppliers and reducing emissions from freight and logistics to the most cost-effective methods to install solar panels and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

According to research, such measures can considerably reduce a company’s operating expenses. For instance:

  • In addition to reducing operating costs, transitioning to electric vehicles can reduce servicing and maintenance costs by about 40 percent compared to petrol or diesel vehicles.
  • Considering that lighting accounts for up to 50 percent of a company’s total electricity bill, implementing changes such as switching to LED bulbs can save up to 40 percent.
  • Training drivers on fuel efficiency can save businesses an average of 15% on fuel use and carbon emissions associated with transporting products.

The new support is aimed at the UK’s 5.5 million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), accounting for approximately 25% of the nation’s emissions. According to research, ninety percent of small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are eager to combat climate change but need help knowing how or where to begin to find the appropriate solutions to reduce their carbon footprint.

Studies indicate that 85 percent of consumers are more likely to purchase from a company with a reputation for sustainability; therefore, going green can contribute to economic growth.

The new UK Business Climate Hub is a one-stop-shop for businesses that have yet to begin making changes and those already taking action to reduce emissions but want to go further.

In addition to assisting employers in measuring and reporting their emissions, the website offers guidance and support on a variety of topics, including:

  • Switching employee modes of conveyance and reducing EV costs
  • Obtaining business grants, ecological loans, and retrofit financing.

The new website is supported by business leaders and ministers on the new Net Zero Council and comes as the organisation calls on business representative organisations across the nation to take concerted action to reduce their members’ emissions.

The group, comprised of CEOs from prominent companies such as Co-op, HSBC, Siemens, and Cemex, has developed a new business roadmap framework to enable companies to collaborate with others in their industry to develop decarbonisation action plans for their own industry.

These sector roadmaps would assist businesses nationwide, from Aberdeen to Aberystwyth and Penzance to Peterborough, to transition to net zero.

In 2020, the UK is projected to have over 400,000 jobs in low-carbon enterprises and their supply chains, with a total revenue of £41.6 billion. 

Since 2020, more than 80,000 green jobs have been created or are in the pipeline due to new government policies; by 2030, this number is projected to reach nearly 500,000.
