The government will announce measures that place energy security at the centre of economic expansion.

This week, the government will outline how it implements its energy security strategy to stimulate economic growth and employment creation throughout the UK.

PM Rishi Sunak will explain how the UK’s world-leading expertise in the energy industry will create jobs, develop the economy, and prevent tyrants like Vladimir Putin from ever again using energy as a weapon of blackmail.

As part of the government’s efforts to strengthen the UK’s energy independence, he will announce investment plans to prioritise powering Britain from Britain – making the most of our country’s resources and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels by supporting our oil and gas industry, investing in the most cutting-edge clean technologies, and isolating Putin’s regime from global energy markets.

The Prime Minister and Energy Security Secretary Grant Shapps will meet with energy industry leaders throughout the week, including oil and gas, renewables, and nuclear businesses, to ensure that the UK is capitalising on opportunities to bolster our energy infrastructure now and enhancing our long-term energy independence, security, and prosperity in the coming years.

The week will also include support for British innovation in emerging industries, such as carbon capture and storage, and cutting-edge renewables nationwide.

Secretary of energy security Grant Shapps said: “Energy security is essential to national security. Since Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, the government has expelled Russia from our energy market, paid approximately fifty per cent of the average family’s energy bill, and boosted the economy by advancing significant energy projects.”

“We will go even further this week. Supporting our indispensable oil and gas industry, maximising our homegrown energy sources, and bolstering British innovation in renewables are essential steps towards re-energising the United Kingdom from within.”

“And across the government, we will advocate for British businesses to deliver on the Prime Minister’s priority of economic growth, assisting them in creating new employment and even entirely new industries across the UK.”

This week’s announcements will build upon the country’s record of excellence, which includes:

  • Supporting North Sea oil and gas contributes £17 billion annually to the British economy.
  • Investing billions of pounds in renewable energy, resulting in the UK having the world’s four largest operational wind farms off its shores; Reducing emissions by 48% between 1990 and 2021 while the economy grows by 65% over the same period; Having 41.5% of the UK’s electricity come from renewable sources in 2022, up from 6.7% in 2010.
  • Leading the world in response to Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and forcing Russia off our energy market for good, allowing the United Kingdom to go over a year without Russian oil or gas.
