Five Priorities Shaping Ofgem’s Work
Ofgem has outlined five core priorities that will guide its actions as it accelerates the shift from gas to renewable energy sources:

Forward Work Programme
Alongside this long-term strategy, Ofgem has published a Forward Work Programme (FWP) for the year ahead. This details immediate actions while also setting the foundation for longer-term transformation. From 2026 onwards, the FWP will include updates on progress against strategic objectives, supported by new metrics to measure impact and success.
Building a New Energy System
Mark McAllister, Chair of Ofgem, explains:
“The challenge of building infrastructure at a rate unseen for decades is there for all to see. But so too are the opportunities and the benefits they could bring for customers across the UK. We all need to work together, in partnership, so everyone can benefit from a new energy system.”
The National Grid Electricity System Operator (ESO) forecasts that electricity demand could rise by more than 50% by 2035, as heating and transport increasingly move away from fossil fuels. This highlights the urgency of creating a clean, secure, and affordable energy system.
