Shropshire is a useful example of how local cost-of-living support actually
works in practice. Like every council in England, Shropshire Council runs its
own hardship funding, council tax help and local welfare support – and
the detail is set locally, so what a Shropshire resident can access will not
be identical to a neighbouring area. This page shows the kinds of help a
resident here can look for and how to find the current scheme.

Local crisis and hardship support

From April 2026 Shropshire Council delivers the Crisis and Resilience Fund,
the government-funded scheme that replaced the Household Support Fund across
England. It provides short-term help with essential costs such as food, energy
and other essentials, and support is not limited to people who are claiming
benefits. As with all councils, Shropshire decides its own rules and how the
help is given, so the way you apply and what you can receive can change as
each round of funding is allocated.

Council tax support

If you are on a low income or claim certain benefits, Shropshire
Council’s Council Tax Reduction scheme may lower your bill. You may also
qualify for a discount or exemption – for example the single person
discount, or a reduction where someone in the home is a full-time student or
is severely mentally impaired. These are applied for through the council.

How to find the current help

Because these schemes are run and updated locally, the most reliable source is
always Shropshire Council itself – look for its cost-of-living, welfare
assistance and council tax reduction pages, or contact its customer services
team to ask what is open now. Advice services such as Citizens Advice
Shropshire can also help you apply and check your wider entitlements.
