The southeast of England has been issued a snow and ice warning, with freezing temperatures expected to activate cold weather payments. 

The warning comes as a non-profit organisation that combats fuel poverty urges the government to provide more assistance to those in peril.

When the average temperature in England and Wales is forecast to be 0 degrees Celsius or lower for seven consecutive days, qualified households will receive £25. This payment will be made to English and Welsh homeowners. The Health and Safety Executive of the UK has issued a level 3 cold weather warning for England. In addition, the Met Office has issued numerous yellow weather warnings for snow and ice in different regions of the UK.

There is the potential for widespread snowfall of 2 to 5 centimeters, with localized accumulations reaching 10 centimeters. Kent, Sussex, Surrey, and Hampshire are the southeast regions of England most likely to be affected. Here are some tips for preparing for snow and frigid weather and staying safe:

  • Check the local weather forecast and travel updates before departure.
  • Layer up for warmth and don non-slip boots or shoes.
  • Maintain a minimum indoor temperature of 18°C and insulate all pipelines and water tanks.
  • In the event of power outages or travel delays, stock up on food, water, and other necessities.
  • Carry an emergency kit containing a blanket, shovel, and phone charger if you must travel.

From the Met Office, Grahame Madge stated, “The forecast for the United Kingdom remains cold for at least the next week, with the possibility that it will persist for even longer.” In addition to the frigid air, several weather-related concerns will be prominent in the southern region of England on Sunday and Monday mornings, including freezing fog. 

Overnight, temperatures are anticipated to fall below 0 degrees Celsius, with some areas reaching as low as -10 degrees Celsius. According to our weather experts’ forecasts, snowfall in the southeast of England is possible on Sunday evening. If this transpires, Monday’s rush hour could experience some congestion.”

National Energy Action has requested that the government provide more aid to “those in the most immediate danger.” Adam Scorer, the organisation’s chief executive, stated that more work is required. 

“Millions will have been dreading winter’s arrival. Due to sky-high prices and the recent cold snap, millions will have difficulty keeping warm inside their residences. 

6.7 million British households are destitute due to the nearly twofold increase in energy costs over the past year.

Daily, we hear from people who are obliged to deactivate their heating system at a time when they could use it. The unfortunate choice is between taking on enormous debt or living in a home without heating, with disastrous consequences. During this winter, the government must provide additional assistance to the most vulnerable citizens.”
