Amidst the ongoing energy crisis, the British government has announced a new initiative to provide financial assistance to millions of households using alternative fuels. The Alternative Fuel Payment (AFP) programme seeks to reduce the burden of rising energy costs while encouraging the use of cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.

Alternative Fuel Payment Scheme Explained

The government has approved a £200 payment for households in the UK that use alternative fuels like heating oil, biomass, or other eco-friendly energy sources. This initiative is part of a larger cost-of-living support package that aims to reduce residential energy costs in the United Kingdom. 

Important elements of the product include:

  • The Energy Price Guarantee: This policy restricts the amount energy suppliers can charge consumers and is projected to save the average British household £900 this winter. The guarantee is valid until March 2024.
  • Non-repayable petroleum bill assistance: Approximately 900,000 homes in England, Scotland, and Wales without a direct link to an energy supplier, such as care homes and park homes, can register online for non-repayable fuel bill assistance of £400.

Grant Shapps, Minister of Business and Energy, emphasised the government’s commitment to providing relief to UK households in the face of rising global energy prices caused by Putin’s illegal conflict.

Advantages of alternate fuels

Utilising alternative fuels has numerous benefits, including:

  • Alternative fuels typically generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional fossil fuels, thereby aiding in the fight against climate change.
  • Energy independence: Utilising indigenous renewable energy resources can lessen the nation’s reliance on imported fossil fuels, thereby enhancing energy security.
  • Cost savings: As renewable energy technologies continue to advance, it is anticipated that the price of alternative fuels will decrease, making them more affordable for households over time.

Requesting Alternative Fuel Payment

In February, the majority of AFP-eligible households in the UK will receive automatic payments from their electricity provider. Applicants for the AFP can do so in February through the same government agency. Support for the EBSS Alternative Funding scheme via a UK-based portal.

Qualifications and Application Procedure

Local governments in the United Kingdom will provide payments to eligible families, including those who obtain their energy through a commercial contract or live off the grid. Potential recipients include:

  • Institutional residents
  • Residents of mobile dwellings
  • Tenants, especially in privately and publicly rented dwellings with private electrical
  • Residents of registered recreational vehicles and houseboats
  • Farmers residing in domestic, off-grid farms

The vast majority of eligible households lack a direct relationship with a domestic energy provider. Customers without online access can use a dedicated customer service line; additional details will be provided next month.

Extra Assistance Measures

In addition to providing cost-of-living payments for retirees, disability-related allowances, and means-tested benefits to low-income households, the government of the UK provides other forms of assistance. The Household Support Fund provides additional assistance to those in greatest need, and £26 billion in targeted aid will assist in protecting the most vulnerable during the next fiscal year.
