Installation Rules Under G98
Under Engineering Recommendation G98, any microgeneration system of up to 3.68 kW per phase (around 800 W for typical plug-in units) does not require prior permission from your Distribution Network Operator (DNO).
However:
- You must notify your DNO after installation.
- The product must be type-tested and compliant with BS 7671 wiring standards and G98 certification requirements.
- Equipment must be registered as compliant in the Energy Networks Association (ENA) Low Carbon Technology (LCT) Register, which lists products tested for safety and UK grid-connection standards.
Legal Status in the UK
As of 2025, plug-in solar panels are not yet authorised for standard domestic grid connection under current UK wiring regulations. They are being assessed under the government’s Solar Roadmap 2025, which aims to create safe routes for future approval.

- Systems must meet all G98 (or G99, for larger systems) requirements.
- Use a qualified electrician to check your wiring.
