British Retail Consortium data are released amid economic anxiety and rising energy costs.

According to official data, food price increases in the UK reached an all-time high in December. And retail industry leaders warned that high inflation would persist in 2023 due to soaring energy costs. According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Nielsen, annual food inflation increased to 13.3% in December, up from 12.4% in November.

According to the BRC, this was the highest monthly rate since data collection began in 2005.

The industry overview revealed that the price of many essential foods jumped sharply during the holiday shopping season. The repercussions of Russia’s war in Ukraine continued to drive up energy prices.

According to the British Retail Consortium, high prices for animal feed, fertilizer, and energy contributed to higher food prices in supermarkets. Which warned that consumers will likely face additional price hikes in 2023.

The British Retail Consortium chief executive stated Christmas was difficult for many people across the country.

“Consumers and companies will face another challenging year in 2023 as inflation shows no imminent signs of decreasing.” In December, production, new orders, and employment decreased for the manufacturing industry.”

Domestic and international demand remained lackluster as the industry experienced a lousy finish in 2022. Companies face increased prices, increasing market volatility, and Brexit-related issues for firms with EU-based clients.

The Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply chief economist stated, “New orders fell at one of the quickest rates in more than a decade. As overseas customers were deterred by Brexit customs requirements driving up costs and delays, and domestic orders were affected by the general pressure of rising prices.”

Households have drastically reduced their expenditure.

According to data compiled by Barclaycard, retail sales declined overall in 2022, while foot traffic on high streets declined during the week preceding the Boxing Day deals. In December, the inflation rate for fresh produce increased to a new record high of 15%, up from 14.3% the previous month.

However, retailers offering steep discounts on non-food items helped decrease December’s shop price inflation figure to 7.3% from 7.4% the previous month. As high street stores and online retailers sought to liquidate excess stock accumulated during supply chain disruptions earlier in 2022.

Aldi reported record Christmas sales due to the rising cost of living.

In December, sales in the UK and Ireland surpassed £1.4 billion for the first time. The retailer emphasized robust sales of fresh meat products. The sales of chilled desserts jumped by 30%, while cheese sales increased by around 50%. As the World Cup and the Christmas season coincided for the first time, food price increases by more than 40%.

Jeremy Hunt confirmed an extension of financial support for firms with high energy bills will be revealed: “early in the new year.”

According to Dickinson, retailers’ energy costs might jump by £7.5 billion without the program. “The government must immediately clarify what future support would entail, or else consumers may pay the price.”
