million individuals are involved in an energy-saving programme.

The National Grid Electricity System Operator’s head of markets recently stated that the organization’s new energy-saving programme “is likely how we’re all going to operate in the future.”

This winter, there have been two activations of the new Demand Flexibility Service, which enables customers to volunteer to use less electricity during periods of high demand to prevent blackouts.

It is an effective “insurance policy” for the upcoming months, according to Claire Dykta, head of markets at The Grid, but is also a demonstration of how the system could accommodate as it becomes more and more dependent on clean, renewable energy, which is more erratic than the polluting fossil fuels it is replacing.

Demand flexibility will become an increasingly significant part of our energy supply mix as time progresses and we all grow accustomed to it.

“Once we have electric cars and no longer use gas boilers, we will use energy considerably differently from how we do now. The ability of consumers to change their desire is how everyone will function in the future.” One of the roughly one million UK households that have signed up to participate in the Demand Flexibility Service is retired grief counsellor Wendy Hall, age 65.

This time, her energy provider requested her to conserve at least 20% of her typical usage over 1.5 hours.

When we got to her modest Chesterfield one-story house, all the lights and appliances were off. To stay warm, Wendy wore her dressing robe and relied on the wood-burning fireplace in the living room to heat that area of the house. She kept her phone, Wi-Fi, and a battery-operated torch close by when the energy reduction was in effect so that she could move around her home in the dark.

The highest money Wendy has so far been able to save in a single session is £3.66. However, she doesn’t use this as her primary driving force.

“The main goal is to prevent blackouts for those who depend on electricity, such as elderly or disabled persons, families with young children, or families. I’ll be happy with anything if I can help them even a little,” remarked Wendy. “Money isn’t the issue; I’m not concerned about that. If turning off the power for an hour will help other people, I’m pleased to do it. When people dug for England during the war, they made do and mended.”

The National Grid stressed that improvements in smart appliances and technologies would eventually make it much simpler for individuals to consume electricity more flexibly, helping to keep costs low while also cutting demand at peak times.

When discussing the Demand Flexibility Service and what it entails, Ms Dykta stated: “I think one thing we should be clear on is that it’s about shifting your energy-intensive appliances, such as your tumble dryer, washing machine, or electric oven and using those at different times.

It doesn’t mean turning off everything and sitting in the dark.

“Great Britain is moving toward a green energy system with a high share of renewables. Demand flexibility is a stage in that path because we are further along than most.” ‘Smart’ consumers actively participate in the system.

But are most British customers prepared to change how they use energy?

Michael Lewis, the CEO of E.ON, thinks they are. According to him, the future of the energy system depends on “smart” consumers taking an active role in it. “I believe that people are ready. They are aware that we must abandon fossil fuels.”

Along with intensifying initiatives to make homes more energy-efficient, he added, “We also need to consider storage.

Batteries are fantastic for short-term storage, and as the fleet of electric vehicles grows, more and more battery capacity will be integrated into the system. However, we also need a long-term solution for seasonal storage. And that will probably be hydrogen. To generate that storage for times when the wind doesn’t blow, we must increase the production of green hydrogen.

The government has eager plans to ramp up battery storage and green hydrogen production and grow wind power by five times by the end of the decade as part of its commitment to decarbonize power generation in this country by 2035.

However, some industry experts are concerned that while technology is developing quickly, it must still be at the requisite scale or price.

According to Kathryn Porter, an energy expert with the Watt Logic consultancy, the system has held up reasonably well this winter, partly because milder weather decreased the need for gas, which accounted for just under 40% of our electrical generation last year.

But she is concerned about the future, notably the reliance on imported electricity from other European nations, particularly France. She remarked that we’re approaching a supply crisis in the middle of this decade. Thinking that we can rely on ageing French reactors to bail us out of the crisis is optimistic. In truth, the French have taken significant portions of their fleet offline for systemic issues twice in the past five years.

“Under existing law, all coal-fired power plants must shut down by October 2024.” Additionally, two of our remaining nuclear power plants will shut down in March 2024.

The scenario is that all of our available spare capacity will be used up by the winter after next.

Therefore, we must replace that. And constructing gas-powered power plants is the only practical solution. More than two years are needed to complete it.
