What customers complain about

Customers complaining to Zurich UK are usually dealing with general insurance (car, home, travel, business) underwritten by Zurich Insurance Company Ltd, or with life, pensions and investments handled by Zurich Assurance Ltd. Complaints commonly concern how a claim was assessed or paid, delays and communication during a claim, policy servicing and renewals, and, for the life/pensions side, advice, charges and administration. Because much of Zurich's business is sold through brokers and intermediaries, people are often first directed back to the broker or the contact on their policy documents before Zurich handles the complaint formally. Zurich follows FCA rules, aiming to resolve issues quickly but with up to eight weeks for a final response; unresolved complaints can go free of charge to the Financial Ombudsman Service within six months of that response.

Complaint categories

  1. 1
    Claims handling and decisions

Complaints about how a general-insurance claim (car, home, travel, business) was assessed, valued, delayed or declined are a core driver of general-insurance complaints — the bulk of Zurich Insurance Company Ltd's 3,407 complaints in 2025 H2 fell under 'insurance & pure protection'.

FCA firm-level complaints data 2025 H2; Zurich's own claims-and-complaints guidance covers claim disputes.
  2. 2
    Policy servicing, renewals and communication

Everyday servicing issues – renewals, changes to cover, documentation and delays or poor communication during a claim – are common general-insurance grievances handled by Zurich's Customer Care Team.

  3. 3
Life, pensions and investment administration and advice

For the Zurich Assurance side, complaints centre on pensions and investment administration, charges and, where advice was given, suitability — in 2025 H2 Zurich Assurance's 2,896 complaints spanned pensions (764), insurance & pure protection (1,851) and investments (278).

Latest statistics

Source: FCA firm-level complaints data, 2025 H2 (reporting period 1 July to 31 December 2025), published April 2026. Figures are per legal entity and per product grouping as the FCA reports them. 'Per 1,000' is the FCA contextualised complaints rate (complaints per 1,000 policies/contracts in force). '% upheld' is complaints upheld in the customer's favour. The FCA firm-level return does not break complaints down by cause (e.g. claims vs service), so theme percentages are not published at firm level.

Contact methods

Complaint journey

  1. 1

Contact your broker or usual Zurich contact

Raise it first with whoever arranged or handles your policy.

    Typical responseVaries
    What happens

Zurich asks you to get in touch first with your usual contact at Zurich, or with the broker or intermediary who arranged your cover – their details are on your welcome, renewal or claim acknowledgement letters. Because much of Zurich's business is sold through brokers and partners, this is often the quickest way to sort a problem out. If that does not resolve it, you can complain to Zurich directly.

  2. 2

Make a formal complaint to the right Zurich team

Send your complaint to the team that matches your product.

    Typical responsePrompt acknowledgement
    What happens

Use the route for your product. For car, home, travel, private clients or business insurance, complete Zurich's general insurance complaints form or write to the Zurich Customer Care Team (3000B Parkway, Whiteley, Fareham PO15 7JZ; motor claims to 7th Floor, 319 St Vincent Street, Glasgow G2 5LP). For life, pensions and investments, use the pensions and investments complaint form. Include your policy or claim number and what outcome you want.

  3. 3

Zurich investigates and issues a final response

Zurich reviews your case and writes to you with its decision.

    Typical responseUp to 8 weeks
    What happens

Zurich says many complaints are resolved within a few days, but under FCA rules it has up to eight weeks to send a final response. In 2025 H2 it closed about 82.7% of general-insurance complaints within eight weeks. The final response letter should explain Zurich's decision and tell you about your right to go to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

  4. 4

Escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service

Ask the free, independent ombudsman to review it if you're still unhappy.

Typical responseWithin 6 months of final response
    What happens

If Zurich's final response does not resolve things, or eight weeks pass without one, you can refer your complaint free of charge to the Financial Ombudsman Service. You normally have six months from the date of Zurich's final response to do so. The ombudsman is independent and can make decisions that are binding on Zurich if you accept them.

Response times

Zurich says many complaints can be resolved within a few days of receipt, but under FCA rules it has up to eight weeks to issue a final response for general insurance and for life, pensions and investments. The FCA's 2025 H2 data shows Zurich Insurance Company Ltd (general insurance) closed about 9.1% of complaints within three working days and about 82.7% within eight weeks; Zurich Assurance Ltd closed a higher share (around 98.6%) within eight weeks across its products. If eight weeks pass without a final response, or you are unhappy with the response, you can go to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Know your rights

  • FCA rules – DISP (dispute resolution) and ICOBS (Insurance Conduct of Business)

As an FCA-regulated insurer, Zurich must handle your complaint fairly, acknowledge it, and issue a final response within eight weeks, and it must tell you about your right to the Financial Ombudsman Service. This is general information, not legal advice.

  • Consumer Insurance (Disclosure and Representations) Act 2012

For consumer policies you only have to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation when taking out or renewing cover; an insurer cannot automatically refuse a claim for an innocent mistake. Relevant if Zurich declines a claim citing something you told it. Not legal advice – check your own circumstances.

  • Consumer Rights Act 2015

The Act's rules on services being carried out with reasonable care and skill, and its protection against unfair contract terms, apply to how Zurich provides and administers your policy. It does not turn an insurance decision into a goods refund, but unfair terms can be challenged. Not legal advice.

No. Insurers are not given a Citizens Advice star rating, so there is no official star score for Zurich UK; the most useful official measures are the FCA's firm-level complaint figures shown above.
