Check if your home qualifies for a free battery
Homeowners and private tenants can apply. It only takes a few minutes.
Installation is carried out by an approved installer, at no cost to eligible households on the free battery scheme. It follows a successful home battery survey, so the installer arrives knowing what the job involves.
Before installation
Once your survey confirms your home is suitable, the installation is approved and a date is arranged with you. If you rent privately, your landlord’s approval must be in place first.
Preparing your home
- Clear access to the agreed battery location
- Clear access to your consumer unit (fuse box) and meter
- Somewhere for the installer to work safely
- Pets and children kept away from the work area
Where can a battery go?
Home batteries are commonly installed in places such as a garage, on an outside wall or in a utility space. The right location for your home is agreed at the survey, taking into account space, access, the electrical connection and safety.
On installation day
Mounting the battery
The battery and associated equipment are fitted in the agreed location.
Electrical connection
The installer connects the battery to your home’s electrical installation.
Commissioning
The system is switched on, tested and checked to make sure it is working correctly.
Connectivity
The battery is connected so it can be managed as part of the programme.
Handover
The installer explains the equipment, answers your questions and tells you how to report any issues.
Will my electricity be switched off?
Connecting any equipment to your electrical installation usually needs the power to be turned off for part of the work.

After installation
Once it’s commissioned and connected, your battery takes part in the programme and your household can receive the applicable benefit — up to £500 per year towards your electricity bills, subject to scheme terms.
The scheme owner remains responsible for the battery: maintaining, servicing and insuring it, replacing it where required and arranging its safe disposal or recycling at the end of its life. See who owns and maintains the battery.
