Free Home Battery Survey – What to Expect

Before any battery is installed, the scheme checks that your home and the proposed location are suitable. Here is what the survey involves.

Check if your home qualifies for a free battery

Homeowners and private tenants can apply. It only takes a few minutes.

Check If My Home QualifiesSubject to property and scheme eligibility.

Every home is different. Before a battery can be installed through the free home battery scheme, a survey confirms whether your property and the proposed installation location are suitable. The survey is free and there is no obligation.

Why is a survey needed?

Anyone who owns their home or rents privately can apply — see who is eligible. But being able to apply isn’t the same as every property being technically suitable. The survey is how the scheme checks this properly, in person, rather than guessing from an online form.

What the surveyor looks at

  • Property suitability

Whether your home, overall, is suitable for a battery installation under the programme.

  • Potential battery location

Where the battery could go — for example a garage, an outside wall or a utility space — and whether that spot works.

  • Electrical installation

Your consumer unit (fuse box), meter position and wiring, and how the battery would connect to them.

  • Connectivity

Whether the battery can stay connected so it can be managed as part of the programme.

  • Access

How the installer would get equipment to the chosen location and route any cabling.

  • Safety considerations

Anything about the location or installation that needs to be taken into account to install the battery safely.

  • Installation planning

What the installation would involve, so the installer arrives prepared.

How to prepare

  • Make sure the surveyor can reach your consumer unit and meter.
  • Think about where a battery might go — the surveyor will advise, but your preferences help.
  • Have details of any existing solar panels or battery to hand, if you have them.
  • If you rent privately, let us know whether you’ve spoken to your landlord — see batteries in rented homes.

What happens after the survey?

If your home is suitable, the installation can be approved and scheduled. Our guide to home battery installation explains what happens next, and how the scheme works shows where the survey fits in the overall journey.

If your home isn’t suitable, the installation won’t go ahead and you won’t have paid anything.
