The scheme is open to private households, whether you own your home or rent privately. Here is what that means in practice.

Is my property suitable?

Being able to apply doesn’t necessarily mean every property will be technically suitable for an installation. That is why the programme includes a property survey.

The survey allows the scheme to confirm whether the property and the proposed installation location are suitable. Suitability can depend on:

  • The property — its layout and whether there is a suitable place for the battery
  • The electrical installation — how the battery would connect to your existing wiring and consumer unit
  • Connectivity — the battery needs a connection so it can be managed as part of the programme
  • Location and access — getting equipment to the proposed location safely
  • Programme requirements — any technical requirements of the programme itself

Do I need solar panels or a smart meter?

You don’t need solar panels to have a home battery — a battery can charge from the electricity network. Our guide to home batteries without solar panels explains the difference. If you already have solar panels, tell us in your application and it will be considered at the survey.

The application asks whether you have a smart meter so the scheme understands your setup. If you’d like to know more about smart meters in general, read our guide to smart meters.

What if my property isn’t suitable?

If the survey finds your property isn’t suitable, the installation won’t go ahead. You won’t have paid anything to apply or for the survey. There may be other support available — see the home energy grants you could still get.
