When the cost of everyday essentials outstrips what’s coming in, there’s more
help available than many people realise — from government schemes run through
your council to free, confidential debt advice. The key is knowing where to
look and asking early.
The Household Support Fund
The Household Support Fund gives money to councils in England to help
residents with the cost of essentials like food, energy and water. It runs
until 31 March 2026, after which the government has said it
will be replaced by a new Crisis and Resilience Fund from
April 2026. Support is given out locally, so what’s on offer — and how you
apply — depends on your council. It’s worth searching your council’s website
for “Household Support Fund” or local welfare assistance.
Help with energy and food
If your energy bills are the problem, there’s specific help — the Warm Home
Discount, Cold Weather Payments and supplier hardship grants — set out on our
energy bill support
page. If you’re struggling to afford food, a food bank can provide emergency
supplies; most work through a referral from Citizens Advice, your council or a
support worker, who can also help with the underlying problem.
Make sure you’re getting what’s yours
Before anything else, check you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to — a
few minutes on a free benefits calculator can uncover hundreds of pounds a
year. See our
benefits and entitlements
page to get started.
Dealing with debt
If you’re falling behind on bills, free debt advice can stop things
spiralling. Charities like StepChange, National Debtline and Citizens Advice
give impartial help and can deal with creditors for you — you never need to
pay a company for debt advice. Our
debt and arrears pages explain your
options.
What to do next
Check your benefits, contact your council about the Household Support Fund,
and get free debt advice if bills are mounting. For local help near you, see
our local support page.
