This month, James Rimmer, Director at Consumer Rights, and I visited Porthi Dre, an organisation in Caernarfon that operates like a food bank, primarily focusing on providing food to the local community.
The dedicated staff at Porthi Dre prepare two weekly meals for the residents and serves various homemade soups daily. This initiative sheds light on the food struggle in the UK and highlights the need for assistance with basic items that everyone should have access to.
In addition to Porthi Dre, there is a shop called O Law I Law in Caernarfon. The shop sustains itself by selling clothes, shoes, and other necessities, allowing the staff to dedicate more attention to the Porthi Dre program.

Consumer Rights made a small donation to Porthi Dre during our visit to contribute to their
One of the ECO Installers associated with Consumer Rights, Making Energy Greener also expressed their desire to donate, which was added to the existing contribution. We extend our gratitude to MEG for their kind donation and hope that other installers we collaborate with will consider doing the same in future.
The visit left myself and James Rimmer deeply moved by the work being done at Porthi Dre. We witnessed first-hand the high demand for food in Caernarfon and the tireless efforts of the staff and volunteers who work diligently daily.
It is essential to acknowledge that the success of these efforts is made possible by the dedicated volunteers who sacrifice their free time to ensure that the residents of Caernarfon do not go hungry. The valuable work they do is recognised and greatly appreciated by the community.
Consumer Rights have discussed the possibility of establishing a stronger partnership with Porthi Dre, which would involve making regular donations. Additionally, we can offer attendees the opportunity to receive government-funded home upgrades through the ECO4 scheme that we promote.
To spread awareness within the local community, leaflets about the current ECO scheme and the available assistance for those living in cold homes were provided during the Porthi Dre visit. This activity is designed to help people in our communities to reduce their
energy bills at a time when costs are extremely high.
Through the ECO4 program, eligible customers can receive home upgrades to insulate their properties and ensure warmth during the winter months without any cost to the homeowner. Consumer Rights envisions this visit as the beginning of a powerful and empowered partnership. We strive to establish numerous partnerships with organisations similar to Porthi Dre across the UK to contribute to feeding the population and combating fuel poverty actively.
Consumer Rights extends our thanks to Making Energy Greener too for their kind donation to Porthi Dre and to every volunteer who selflessly devotes their spare time to ensure that the residents of Caernarfon are provided with food. Outstanding work from normal everyday people within our communities who selflessly go the extra mile to help others – we applaud you!
