The owner described how the system works: geothermal energy is gently circulated through a system of pipes as heat is absorbed from the environment, either from the air or deep within the ground. This heat is then transferred to a refrigerant fluid that is compressed and circulated through a series of pipes (in the case of ground source heat pumps, these are laid in the soil outside).

There are only 3,000 qualified heating experts in the UK, but it is projected that we will need roughly 27,000 to reach net-zero goals and replace 25 million gas-guzzling boilers.
Both pumps and installation are in high demand.
Heat pumps are expensive and difficult to come by, just like any other highly desired equipment. The cost of revolutionary heating is high. The cost of air source pumps, which draw air into the system to heat the water, ranges from roughly £12,000 to £18,000.
Since the installation must drill up to 100 meters into the ground to reach the heat, a vertical ground source heat pump is more expensive and typically costs between £30,000 and £45,000. Additionally, under the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme, residents of England and Wales may be eligible for a grant of up to £6,000 to help pay for the installation of a heat pump.
Due to zoning restrictions, owners of heritage buildings and listed residences may presume heat pumps are also off-limits to solar energy.
Many people experience difficulties applying for permission to install a heat pump.
Only the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has simplified its renewable-energy licence for listed homes, making it easier to install. Councils are expected to reassess such permissions in line with their net-zero ambitions.
There are also fascinating new technical developments. Dandelion, a Google X product currently undergoing US trial, has entered this market. Here, the idea relates to geothermal heat drilling. Dandelion is developing a form of “keyhole surgery” for heat pumps in place of pricey rigs and boreholes. Because your entire garden will only need to be dug up for several weeks, the expense and interruption are reduced.
But what do heat pumps get you, aside from warmth?
Switching from an oil or conventional boiler to a heat pump gives you some insurance against rising gas prices in light of the ongoing energy crisis. Of course, you still require electricity. However, the Energy Savings Trust asserts that despite this, heat pumps are still more effective than other types of heating systems since they generate more heat than they consume in terms of electricity. A datasheet for each pump will show the ratio obtained under test conditions.
However, this will differ in a real-world setting, such as your home, depending on the size of the system you install, seasonal temperature differences, and how well-insulated your property is. Your heat pump gives you freedom in terms of when you use it.
