What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is used to relocate outdoor heat into the residence. It uses energy to accomplish this, but the heat provided to your home is significantly larger than the amount of electricity necessary to operate the system. Because a heat pump collects heat already available in the environment, the system does not consume any fuel and emits no carbon dioxide.

How do heat pumps operate?

Everything in our environment possesses thermal energy or heat. Naturally, heat moves from a warmer location to a cooler one. To heat a home when exterior temperatures are lower, heat must move in the opposite direction, from a colder location in the house to a warmer one.  When the pressure of a gas is increased, so does its temperature. When the pressure falls, the temperature falls as well. This link between pressure and temperature is essential to understanding how a heat pump operates.

Typically, heat pumps transmit thermal energy between an enclosed environment and the outdoors. When the energy is used to heat the building, it is transported from the exterior. A heat pump can also serve as an air conditioner by transferring heat from the structure to the outdoors. A heat pump takes ambient heat and transmits it to your residence. It does so by using energy, but the heat supplied to your home exceeds the amount of electricity required to operate the system.

Since a heat pump does not consume any fuel and emits no carbon dioxide, it does not contribute to global warming.

What is the heat pump’s efficiency?

Heat pumps are more energy-efficient than most heating systems because they produce more heat than they consume in electricity. The performance coefficient is the heat produced per unit of energy consumed (CoP). A heat pump with a COP of 3.0 will create three units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.

In this instance, the heat pump has a 3kW electrical input and a 14kW heat output. The environment provides the remaining 11kW. In this instance, the CoP is calculated by dividing the heat output by the electrical input, yielding a value of 4.7.

Every heat pump has a datasheet with the measured CoP. Under specific test conditions, the CoP is measured at a single point in time. However, because the heat pump experiences temperature changes throughout the year (i.e., rising and falling ground and air temperatures as the seasons change), the CoP is not necessarily helpful in determining the cost of operating the heat pump or its efficiency in the real world over a year. Several variables will affect the impact on your energy bill, including:

  • What alternative fuels are available, and how much do they cost?
  • The monthly cost of electricity.
  • How effective are the heat pumps that you install?
  • The design of your central heating system.
  • The annual average air and ground temperatures in your region.

Grants and subsidies are available for heat pumps and other renewable heating methods. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme runs from April 2022 to April 2025  in England and Wales. In Scotland, you could apply for an interest-free loan, finance your renewable heating system, and even submit an application for a green mortgage. From 1 April 2022, residents of England and Wales can apply for a £5,000 contribution to help towards the cost of the air source heat pump or a £6,000 contribution towards the cost of a ground source system.

Who fits the criteria for the heat pump grant?

To be eligible for a heat pump grant, you must own or reside in the residence where renewable energy is installed. You must therefore be a landlord, tenant, social landlord, private landlord, or self-builder. When constructing a new home, it must be custom-made. Your home must be self-sufficient, meaning renewable energy cannot be used to power the entire neighbourhood. The property’s occupant must get one of the following advantages, credits, or allowances:

  • Income based job seekers allowance
  • Income related employment and support allowance
  • Income support
  • Pension credit guarantee credit
  • Working tax credit
  • Child tax credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing benefit
  • Pension credit savings credit
  • Child benefit (with dependencies)

If you do not qualify through ECO4, you could qualify through route 1 or 3 of the LA Flex route.

What is the LA Flex Scheme?

The government provides grant funding for energy efficient upgrades through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme. The LA Flex scheme is one of the opportunities available to homeowners, tenants, and landlords through ECO4.

To be eligible for the LA Flex fund, you must satisfy one or more of the following requirements:

  • Low-income: If the Household income is less than £31,000 before tax you will qualify through route 1 of the LA Flex scheme.
  • Certain conditions that are impacted by the cold: Those with respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, neurobiological disease, cancer, limited mobility, or autoimmune and immunological diseases will qualify via route 3 of the LA Flex scheme.

  • Gather any required documentation, such as confirmation of income, benefits received.
