Insulation grants are available to assist low income and high energy cost households improve the energy efficiency of a home.
Governments and energy agencies offer insulation grants as financial incentives to encourage homeowners and businesses to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. These grants typically cover a portion of the cost of insulating a building, making insulation initiatives more affordable for individuals and organisations.
By adding insulation, buildings are better able to retain heat in the winter and remain colder in the summer, resulting in lower energy costs and lower carbon emissions. Insulation grants play a crucial role in promoting sustainability and energy conservation efforts, resulting in environmental and economic benefits.
Why are there insulation grants available?
The government’s ECO program provides access to the insulation grant, which can improve your home and reduce your energy expenditures. Under the government-supported ECO (Energy Company Obligation) programme, insulation grants are not considered loans. The prize does not require repayment at any given time. The grant is offered to low income families as well as families with health conditions and in reciept of benefits. This post will explain an insulation grant and how you might qualify for one.
An insulation grant seeks to minimise energy expenses and increase your home’s insulation. These grants are available through the ECO4 program of the government. You can apply for this award to properly insulate your home to make it more energy efficient. Under the ECO insulation initiative, the following grants are available for the installation of your choice of insulation:
- Boiler Replacement
- New heating technologies, including heat pumps and storage heaters
- Internal Wall Insulation
- Cavity Wall Insulation
- External Wall Insulation (with a contribution)
- Solar panels
Would I be eligible for a grant?
You should be eligible for an insulation grant if you own or rent a house. Providing you meet the program’s eligibility requirements, the grant will pay the installation cost without additional costs to the homeowner. Under the ECO plan, primary energy suppliers such as British Gas, E.ON, Scottish Power, and OFGEM are expected to give grants to pay insulation costs in eligible single-family homes. Also eligible for grants are homes having an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E, F, or G.
Once you have received your grant and the insulation work has been performed, your annual energy costs should begin to decrease. If eligible, you could recieve funding for one of the listed schemes below.
Check your EPC Rating
Energy Performance Certificates
An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) tells you how energy-efficient a property is. It would be best if you had an EPC in England and Wales when you’re:
- selling a property
- renting out a property
- building a new property
You must order an EPC for potential buyers and tenants before you market your property to sell or rent.
In Scotland, it is not compulsory to have an EPC rating though there is talk of legislation changing this in the future.
An EPC contains:
- information about a property’s energy use and typical energy costs
- steps to improve a property’s energy efficiency and save money
An EPC gives a property an energy efficiency rating from A (best) to G (worst) and is valid for 10 years.
ECO4
ECO is an abbreviation for Energy Company Obligation. This government-led initiative in the UK seeks to eliminate fuel poverty and cut carbon emissions.
The Energy Company Obligation finances the installation of energy-efficient measures in British residences by large and medium-sized energy companies. Installers and required energy suppliers collaborate to install energy-saving measures in your homes, such as loft, wall, and heating improvements. The Home Heating Cost Reduction Requirement (HHCRO) is the only requirement within the ECO4 system.
How is eligibility for the ECO4 determined?
You could be eligible for an ECO4 grant if you or a household member receives one or more of the following benefits:
- Income based job seekers allowance
- Income related employment and support allowance
- Income support
- Pension credit guarantee credit
- Working tax credit
- Child tax credit
- Universal Credit
- Housing benefit
- Pension credit savings credit
- Child benefit (with dependencies)
Disabled households may also be considered individually if they meet the means-tested benefits requirements. Those who do not receive benefits but meet their council’s LA Flex eligibility criteria may still apply. Once you meet the government’s requirements and qualify for this funding-based programme, your grant will pay all installation costs.

What is the LA Flex Scheme?
The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) programme assists British homes in reducing their carbon footprint and improving their energy efficiency. Local Authority Flexibility or LA Flex, provides money for a free boiler and insulation measures, all of which aim to lower bills and increase the energy efficiency of the homeowner’s home at no additional cost to the homeowner. LA Flex stands for Local Authority Flexibile Eligibility. The requirements for LA Flex will differ from council to council.
To be eligible for the LA Flex fund, you must satisfy one or more of the following requirements:
- Low-income: If the Household income is less than £31,000 before tax you will qualify through route 1 of the LA Flex scheme.
- Certain conditions that are impacted by the cold: Those with respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, neurobiological disease, cancer, limited mobility, or autoimmune and immunological diseases will qualify via route 3 of the LA Flex scheme.
