In the first few months of 2023, a great deal has occurred in the energy sector. The government announced its intention to invest £32 million in the Heat Network Efficiency Plan to improve the nation’s energy infrastructure. This was after Chris Skidmore MP released his much-anticipated net-zero evaluation on January 13, highlighting the need for a more significant push for the UK to realise its net-zero goals.

These significant government initiatives do not operate in a vacuum since the cost-of-living problem increases the need for campaigns that put energy efficiency on the map.

Add to this the increased consumer awareness of the issue and the strengthened will to fulfil the UK’s net-zero commitments, and a multitude of forces will continue to impact the future of the UK’s energy landscape.

Living expenses will continue to be a burden.

In 2023, Britons will continue to face the effects of the cost of living problem. The National Institute of Economic & Social Research predicts that low- and middle-income households will incur a £4,000 financial loss this year. Given this harsh economic environment, Ofgem hiked energy unit tariffs on January 1, and the government will restrict consumer support beginning April 1.

So, the upcoming months will bring more significant energy costs, exacerbating the current cost-of-living crisis. Ongoing assistance will only solve a portion of the problem instead of effectively addressing the core cause of exorbitant energy bills.

Recent research by Grundfos finds that two-thirds of British households are already concerned about growing energy costs, while one-quarter are concerned about blackouts. As a result, officials tasked with relieving consumers, and small companies should continue prioritising the cost-of-living problem and spiralling energy prices.

Net-zero objectives will be more ambitious than ever.

Every year brings us closer to the UK’s 2050 objective of achieving net-zero emissions. As indicated in Mission Zero, the net-zero review by Chris Skidmore MP, achieving this goal will need substantial infrastructure investment. For instance, the UK may decarbonise its heating infrastructure cost-effectively by deploying heat networks across all local authorities.

A strategy of this nature would make the water-energy economy more “circular” by converting waste into reuse. This is possible because heat networks utilise surplus energy from one region to meet demand in another. Eliminating unneeded emissions from industry could consequently contribute to family bill subsidies.

This proposal would also encourage investment and, in the longer term, potentially eliminate the use of fossil fuel boilers by 2040. Moreover, providing the UK with the EU’s “Fit-for-55” plan for a green transition could address other concerns raised by the Skidmore review – namely, that the UK lags behind its international competitors in capturing the economic opportunities presented by the transition to net zero.

Although industry and policy stakeholders await the government’s response to the Skidmore study, one thing is sure: Mission Zero has put them on the government to act and should galvanise the energy and policy sectors to fulfil the nation’s net-zero emissions pledges.

Efficiency will continue to be crucial.

It will be more crucial than ever for houses and businesses to enhance their energy efficiency due to economic and environmental factors.

Globally, Grundfos estimates that a staggering 200 million outdated, energy-wasting pumps heat homes and businesses. These inefficient pumps may be replaced to save 53.5TWh, equal to Portugal’s yearly electricity usage! 

According to a report sponsored by Grundfos and produced by the Centre for Economic Business Research, families and businesses in the UK might be missing out on up to £3.1 billion in annual savings by failing to improve the energy efficiency of their homes and buildings.

Establishing mandated energy efficiency tests for all building heating systems, with a promise to assess 40% of buildings within a year, would benefit the British people.

Energy efficiency must remain a principal focus on legislative agendas to achieve net-zero goals and cut energy costs.

While the government’s “It All Adds Up” campaign demonstrates a commendable effort to increase public awareness of energy conservation, consumers will increasingly seek beyond simple suggestions such as purchasing draught excluders and unplugging equipment. If consumers are made aware of innovative techniques to advance the energy efficiency of their households, rapid adoption will ensue.

Government programmes will be evaluated.

The general public requires additional initiatives similar to the Heat Network Efficiency Plan, which will give our energy infrastructure a much-needed facelift by promoting the adoption of heat networks as an alternative to energy-wasting gas boilers.

Programmes like these are refreshingly more comprehensive than the Great British Insulation Scheme plan, which, by encouraging customers to install insulation, fails to address their energy efficiency problems at their root.

Yet, this does not mean that firms struggling to increase their energy efficiency would not benefit from financial assistance. Concerned about the possibly exorbitant price of energy efficiency measures, 35% of businesses cite this as the primary obstacle to adoption.

So, it is unsurprising that government incentives would encourage one-third.

In summary, the government will experience heightened pressure to address energy inefficiency in a way that promotes long-term efficiency. Energy inefficiency is causing us to lose money and emit greenhouse gases, and it will not suffice to bandage this wound.

Stakeholders can sidestep these difficulties by accepting ideas and solutions that move us closer to an energy reality based on efficiency, resilience, and environmental responsibility.

While by no means a complete analysis of the undercurrents driving the UK’s energy landscape, the trends above, informed by research and policy changes, will significantly impact the measures we take to construct our nation’s energy future.
