The Warm Homes Loan Scheme is a UK government scheme designed to help private sector lenders offer lower-interest finance for green home improvements such as solar panels, batteries and heat pumps.
At this stage, the scheme is not a direct loan application route for homeowners. The current application process is for lenders who want to participate in the scheme. If lenders are approved, they may later offer Warm Homes Loan products to homeowners and private rented sector landlords.
The scheme opened for lender applications on 24 June 2026 and the first application window closes on 17 July 2026. The overall scheme is currently listed as running until 31 March 2030. Official government grant listing.
What Is The Warm Homes Loan Scheme?
The Warm Homes Loan Scheme, also known as WHLS, is intended to reduce the upfront cost barrier of installing low-carbon home upgrades.
Instead of paying grants directly to households, the government supports participating lenders. Those lenders can then offer eligible finance products at lower interest rates than they might otherwise provide.
This makes the Warm Homes Loan Scheme different from grant schemes such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme or ECO4, where support is linked more directly to the installation or eligible household.
How Does The Warm Homes Loan Scheme Work?
The scheme works through lenders rather than direct homeowner applications.
- The government invites lenders to apply to join the scheme.
- Approved lenders enter into a Grant Funding Agreement with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
- Lenders submit eligible loan products for approval.
- If approved, those lenders can offer lower-interest green home finance products.
- Homeowners or private landlords may then be able to apply through participating lenders once products are launched.
