Replacing an old or broken heating system is a big expense, and there’s grant
support to help — especially if you’re moving to low-carbon heating. Here’s
what you can get and how it works.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The main grant for heating is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme,
which gives £7,500 towards an air- or ground-source heat
pump, or £5,000 towards a biomass boiler, in England and
Wales. Your MCS-certified installer applies on your behalf and takes the grant
off the price. It’s open to most homeowners and small landlords replacing
fossil-fuel heating.

What about a replacement gas boiler?

Grants for like-for-like gas boilers are very limited. The old ECO4 scheme,
which could replace broken heating for low-income households, has now
closed to new applications — see
what to do now that ECO4 has closed. Lower-income households in England may still get help through the
Warm Homes: Local Grant.
