Unlike many government grants, you do not apply directly yourself. Instead, your chosen MCS-certified installer submits the application to Ofgem on your behalf.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is installer-led. Once your application is approved, the grant is deducted from your installation cost rather than being paid directly to you.

How Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Application Work?

The application process is designed to be straightforward for property owners.

Your installer manages most of the administration while Ofgem checks that the installation meets the scheme requirements.

Step 1: Find an MCS-Certified Installer

Your first step is choosing an installer certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

Only MCS-certified installers can submit Boiler Upgrade Scheme applications.

Before agreeing to any work, you should also check your Boiler Upgrade Scheme eligibility.

Step 2: Property Survey and Quotation

Your installer will assess your property to determine whether a heat pump or biomass boiler is suitable.

They’ll usually consider:

  • Your current heating system.
  • The size of your property.
  • Your home’s insulation.
  • Your heating requirements.
  • The most suitable low-carbon heating technology.

You should receive a written quotation showing both the installation cost and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant deduction.

Step 3: Your Installer Applies to Ofgem

If you decide to proceed, your installer submits the Boiler Upgrade Scheme application to Ofgem.

You do not submit the application yourself.

Ofgem checks that the application meets the scheme requirements before issuing a grant voucher.
