People often ask about “free window grants”, so it’s worth being straight
about this: standalone grants just for replacement windows are rare. But there
are routes to help with home improvements in the right circumstances.

Grants for windows

There’s generally
no dedicated national grant purely for new windows.
Energy-efficiency schemes focus on the measures that save the most energy
first — insulation and heating — though improvements can sometimes form part
of a wider funded package for a very inefficient home. Be sceptical of adverts
promising “free windows for everyone”; they’re usually sales pitches, not
grants.

Help with home improvements

Where a home improvement is about health, safety or disability, more help is
available. A Disabled Facilities Grant from your council can
pay up to £30,000 in England towards adaptations like ramps, stairlifts or a
downstairs bathroom (see
families and disability support). Many areas also have a Home Improvement Agency that helps older and
disabled residents with repairs and adaptations, and some councils offer their
own local assistance.
