Another way some companies mislead homeowners is by using so-called “window recycling schemes.” These programs claim to offer financial incentives in exchange for your old windows, making it seem like you’re getting a government-backed grant. In reality, this is just another marketing ploy.
Many companies do responsibly recycle old materials. But when businesses use these programs to falsely suggest a government grant exists, it becomes misleading. If a company claims they can provide government-backed discounts through recycling schemes, be sceptical and always check the fine print.
What is available?
In truth, not much in relation to windows. In some cases, funding for window replacements is available through airport noise insulation schemes for homeowners living directly under flight paths. Certain airports offer grants or funding to help reduce noise pollution, which can include installing double or triple glazing. However, these programs are highly specific to affected areas and are not part of a nationwide government initiative. Additionally, some window companies offer finance schemes that allow homeowners to spread the cost of new windows over time, sometimes with interest-free options.
If your main concern is energy efficiency, the ECO4 scheme might be a better option, as it provides funding for home improvements like insulation and heating upgrades, which can have a bigger impact on reducing energy bills—just not for windows.
Be wary of scams
When looking into free upgrades it’s important to stay vigilant in protecting yourself against scams. One of the best ways to do this is to fact check what’s being offered and don’t be lured in with false promises.
