Work Capability Assessment Reform – Simpler and Fairer

Major reforms to the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) are being rolled out gradually from mid-2025 through 2026. The updated system focuses more on an individual’s support needs and work potential rather than medical labels, aiming to make the process clearer and less stressful for claimants of Universal Credit and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).

The phased rollout begins with new claimants in selected areas before expanding across the UK.

Updated Housing Limits and Local Housing Allowance (LHA)

New Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates and housing support limits come into effect from October 2025, reflecting updated rental averages in most local areas.

This means some renters may see a small rise in their housing element of Universal Credit or Housing Benefit. If you rent privately, check the new LHA rate for your postcode on GOV.UK to make sure you’re receiving the correct support.

Warm Home Discount 2025–26 – Letters Now Being Sent

The Warm Home Discount scheme reopens this month for winter 2025–26, providing a £150 rebate on energy bills for eligible households.

Letters confirming eligibility are being sent throughout October and November. If you haven’t received one by late November, contact your energy supplier or the Warm Home Discount helpline.

You may qualify automatically if you receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit or certain income-based benefits.

Carer’s Allowance – New Updates for 2025

From October 2025, the Carer’s Allowance earnings limit has increased to £196 per week. This higher threshold allows carers to stay in part-time work while continuing to receive Carer’s Allowance.
