PIP Components and Payment Rates (April 2025–March 2026)

PIP consists of two components:​

  1. Daily Living Component: For individuals needing assistance with everyday tasks.
  2. Mobility Component: For individuals needing assistance with moving around.Each component has two rates, determined by the severity of the individual’s condition:​

Daily Living Component:

  • Standard rate: £73.90 per week
  • Enhanced rate: £110.40 per week

Mobility Component:

  • Standard rate: £29.20 per week
  • Enhanced rate: £77.05 per week​

The overall PIP payment amount is determined by the specific components and their corresponding rates that an individual is awarded.

What is PIP

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a UK government benefit for individuals aged 16 and over with long-term physical or mental health conditions or disabilities. 

Administered by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) in England and Wales, and by Social Security Scotland in Scotland, PIP offers financial support for the additional expenses resulting from daily living or mobility challenges. 

This benefit is not means-tested and is therefore available irrespective of an individual’s income or savings.

PIP Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for PIP in 2025, applicants must meet the following conditions:​

  • Be aged 16 or over and under State Pension age.
  • Have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability.
  • Experience difficulties with daily living or mobility tasks.
  • Expect these difficulties to last for at least 12 months from when they started

Additional considerations include:​

  • Applicants must have lived in England, Scotland, or Wales for at least 2 of the last 3 years and be residing in one of these countries when applying.
  • PIP can be received alongside most other benefits, except for the Armed Forces Independence Payment.
  • If receiving Constant Attendance Allowance, the daily living part of PIP may be reduced.
  • If receiving War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement, the mobility part of PIP is not payable.​

 

Assessment Process

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) uses a points system to evaluate how a person’s health condition impacts their ability to manage daily activities and get around. These assessments take into account:

  • The ability to perform specific tasks safely.
  • The time taken to complete tasks.
  • The frequency and severity of difficulties.
  • The need for assistance or special equipment.​

PIP eligibility hinges on an assessment of an individual’s capacity to carry out daily living tasks. Points are assigned according to their level of independence in activities like preparing food, managing medication, personal hygiene (washing and dressing), and mobility. Achieving a specific point threshold across these activities is necessary to qualify for either the standard or enhanced PIP rates.

PIP Application Process

To apply for PIP:

  1. Initiate the Claim: Contact the DWP to start the application process.
  2. Complete the Form: Fill out the ‘How your disability affects you’ form, detailing how your condition impacts daily life.
  3. Assessment: Attend an assessment, which may be conducted in person, over the phone, or via video call.
  4. Decision: Receive a decision letter outlining the outcome of your application.​

Applicants have the right to request a mandatory reconsideration if they disagree with the decision.​

Changes to Eligibility Criteria (Effective November 2026)

The UK government has announced forthcoming changes to PIP eligibility criteria:​

  • From November 2026, applicants must score at least 4 points in any one daily living activity to qualify for the daily living component.
  • The mobility component criteria remain unchanged.​

The goal of these revisions is to channel assistance towards those facing substantial difficulties in carrying out daily activities.

Additional Support

Individuals receiving PIP may also be eligible for:​

  • Carer’s Allowance: If someone provides regular care for you.
  • Motability Scheme: To lease a vehicle, scooter, or powered wheelchair.
  • Blue Badge Scheme: For parking concessions.
  • Disabled Facilities Grants: For home adaptations.​

​Individuals facing ongoing health issues or disabilities may be eligible for additional support to help cover the increased expenses they incur. These supports aim to provide financial assistance for the extra costs related to managing long-term health conditions or disabilities.
