Households in Northern Ireland will get assistance with energy bills with a single £600 payment beginning January 2023.

The administration stated that the change was made to establish that “the full impact of the scheme is seen as soon as possible.”

Customers using direct debit will have £600 deposited directly into their bank accounts

Other consumers will receive a £600 voucher that can be used. The government noted that “additional details on how they will function and what identification will be necessary will be provided shortly.”

Details of the voucher program are anticipated to be revealed: “very soon.” It is anticipated that it will be mailed to customers with pre-pay meters or who pay their bills quarterly. Officials warn individuals not to contact their energy providers.

The government once more attributed the delay in payment to the collapse of devolution and the disparity in the energy market

In a letter to Northern Ireland energy suppliers, the Minister for Energy and Climate outlined his expectations. Including a request that they cease all debt recovery and enforcement efforts until the end of January. And extend payment holidays to clients who cannot pay their bills. The payment will be comprised of £400 from the Energy Bills Support Scheme Northern Ireland and £200 from the Alternative Fuel Payment.

The UK Government will fund Northern Ireland electrical firms to enable the payment rollout.

A government spokeswoman stated, “Households in Northern Ireland will receive assistance with their energy costs this winter. A single payment of £600 will begin in January 2023. Ensuring the full benefits of the scheme are seen as soon as possible.” The help will combine £400 from the government’s Energy Bills Support Plan Northern Ireland. With  from the Chancellor’s announced Alternative Fuel Payment (AFP) scheme.

Today, the government confirmed that it will finance Northern Ireland electrical firms for these required payments. With direct debit, customers receive a £600 payment directly into their bank accounts.

“Other consumers will be emailed a voucher to redeem the £600 payment, with further instructions and identification requirements to be provided shortly.”

The statement continues, “The Northern Ireland scheme differs from the EBSS in Great Britain. Due to the unique and complicated characteristics of the Northern Ireland energy market. “Recognizing the urgent need for this assistance, Northern Ireland consumers will get a single, one-time £600 payment. Meaning they will receive the whole amount before households in the UK.

“Payments will commence in January. The government had to step in and work quickly with Northern Ireland stakeholders. To conquer the complexities of the Northern Ireland energy market to support households after political parties failed to find a solution.

Grant Shapps stated, “We want homes in Northern Ireland to be able to stay warm this winter and worry less about the repercussions of turning up the thermostat.” 

This announcement comes in addition to the Energy Price Guarantee. Which has been subsidizing Northern Ireland’s energy costs since November. Energy consumers in Northern Ireland will be the first in the UK to receive the payment package provided by our Energy Bills Support Scheme.

With our Northern Ireland Alternative Fuel Payments, households will earn a total of £600 beginning next month.”

Chris Heaton-Harris, stated, “I am acutely aware of the confusion and frustration that residents of Northern Ireland have felt regarding their energy bill assistance.” “Families may begin the new year with confidence that they will receive full help beginning in January. In addition to reductions offered through the EBSS and Alternative Fuel Payments, the government’s Energy Price Guarantee has saved each Northern Ireland household around £65 and those using gas an additional £75. This year, disadvantaged households will receive additional direct payments. Including cost-of-living payments for retirees, persons receiving disability-related allowances, and those getting means-tested benefits.

The Household Support Fund gives additional aid to those in greatest need.

And £26 billion in targeted aid will help protect the most vulnerable throughout the upcoming fiscal year. Graham Stuart, stated, “This funding will be a lifeline for Northern Ireland residents. It will supplement our present assistance. Giving them the peace of mind to keep their heat on and endure a brutal winter thus far.”
