Ecotricity Customers and Home Batteries

Ecotricity invests in wind, solar and even a grid-scale battery — but it doesn’t sell batteries for homes. Here’s what that means if you’re an Ecotricity customer interested in battery storage.

Whoever supplies your electricity, you may be able to apply for the Free Home Battery Scheme. Eligible private households can apply for a home battery installed at no cost, with up to £500 per year towards electricity bills, subject to scheme terms.

Homeowners and private tenants can apply. It only takes a few minutes.

The Free Home Battery Scheme described on this website is not an Ecotricity scheme. Your electricity supplier is separate from the organisation providing and operating the battery programme.

Ecotricity and battery storage

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with Ecotricity before deciding.

Ecotricity reinvests customers’ bills in new green generation (“Bills into Mills”), and its generation includes a grid-scale battery beside one of its wind farms. Its “Smart Grid” platform optimises large batteries and renewable sites for businesses. For households, though, Ecotricity didn’t sell batteries, solar or heat pumps when we checked, and had no home battery tariff.

For how storage works at home rather than grid scale, read how a home battery works.

Ecotricity tariffs for solar and battery owners

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with Ecotricity before deciding.

  • Smart Export Tariff — a variable export rate for Ecotricity electricity customers with a smart meter, for solar or wind. Ecotricity’s page doesn’t mention batteries.
  • EV tariff — a fixed tariff with a five-hour cheap overnight window, for EV and plug-in hybrid owners with a half-hourly smart meter.
  • Economy 7 — an add-on with a cheaper overnight rate, which a battery could use to store cheaper electricity. See how tariffs affect what a battery can save.

If you want a battery as an Ecotricity customer

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with Ecotricity before deciding.

Ecotricity doesn’t sell or install home batteries, so you’d either buy one from an independent MCS-certified installer or apply for the Free Home Battery Scheme. Things to weigh up:

  • Your tariff — Ecotricity’s Green Variable tariff is a single-rate tariff, so a battery has little price gap to work with. Economy 7 or the EV tariff give a cheaper overnight window a battery could charge in. See electricity bill savings with a battery.
  • Exporting — the Smart Export Tariff is described for solar and wind generation; Ecotricity’s page doesn’t say how exports from a battery are treated, so check before relying on it.
  • No solar? A battery can still charge from the grid — see batteries without solar panels.

Why Ecotricity is different on price

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with Ecotricity before deciding.

Ecotricity’s Green Variable tariff has permission from Ofgem to be priced above the price cap, to fund new renewable generation — the company reinvests customers’ bills in new wind and sun parks rather than paying dividends. That green positioning matters to many of its customers, but it also means the maths of battery savings on its tariffs can look different from suppliers with cheaper time-of-use rates.

The scheme is open to private households, whether you own your home or rent privately (with your landlord’s approval before installation). Tell us who supplies your electricity in your application — your home’s suitability is then confirmed through the application and the home survey. Read who can apply or how the scheme works.

Ecotricity and home batteries: FAQs

Does Ecotricity sell home batteries?

Not when we checked. Ecotricity runs grid-scale battery storage but didn’t offer batteries, solar or heat pumps for homes.

Is the Free Home Battery Scheme an Ecotricity scheme?

No. Despite Ecotricity’s own grid battery, the Free Home Battery Scheme isn’t connected with it and Ecotricity doesn’t operate, fund or endorse it.

Can Ecotricity customers apply for the Free Home Battery Scheme?

Yes. Being on Green Variable, Economy 7 or the EV tariff doesn’t stop you applying. Tell us your tariff in the application.

What was the Ecotricity Black Box?

A home battery trial Ecotricity ran around 2015–17. It isn’t a current offer.
