Check if your home qualifies for a free battery
Homeowners and private tenants can apply. It only takes a few minutes.
Your electricity supplier and the Free Home Battery Scheme are separate. The scheme is not run by, funded by or partnered with any energy supplier unless we say so explicitly on that supplier’s page — and at the moment none of the supplier guides below describes such a partnership.
That doesn’t mean your supplier is irrelevant. Some suppliers sell batteries, offer battery or time-of-use tariffs, or run their own trials and flexibility schemes. Each guide explains what that supplier offers and how it relates to having a home battery.

Does my energy supplier matter for the scheme?
The scheme is open to private households — homeowners and private tenants (with landlord approval before installation). Your application asks who supplies your electricity, and whether your home and set-up are suitable is confirmed through the application and the home survey.
Supplier changed its name or closed?
Several well-known suppliers no longer trade under their own name. If you were with one of these, your electricity is now supplied as shown:
| Former supplier | Now supplied by |
|---|---|
| Shell Energy | Octopus Energy |
| Bulb | Octopus Energy |
| Co-op Energy | Octopus Energy (supplies it) |
| SSE | OVO Energy |
| npower | E.ON Next |
| Sainsbury’s Energy | E.ON Next (supplies it) |
| Rebel Energy and Tomato Energy | British Gas (Supplier of Last Resort) |
