Whoever supplies your electricity, you may be able to apply for the Free Home Battery Scheme. Eligible private households can apply for a home battery installed at no cost, with up to £500 per year towards electricity bills, subject to scheme terms.
Check if your home qualifies for a free battery
Homeowners and private tenants can apply. It only takes a few minutes.
The Free Home Battery Scheme described on this website is not a Utility Warehouse scheme. Your electricity supplier is separate from the organisation providing and operating the battery programme.

Utility Warehouse and home battery storage
Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with Utility Warehouse before deciding.
Utility Warehouse (UW) supplies energy alongside broadband, mobile and insurance, and gives bigger discounts the more services you take. When we checked, UW didn’t sell or install batteries or solar panels, and it had no battery-specific tariff or flexibility scheme. Its guidance on solar points readers to MCS-certified installers without naming a partner.
What matters for UW customers with a battery
Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with Utility Warehouse before deciding.
- EV tariff — UW’s only time-of-use tariff, with cheaper electricity from midnight to 5am. It’s for EV or plug-in hybrid owners with a working smart meter, and the off-peak price falls the more UW services you hold. UW’s page doesn’t say how home batteries are treated.
- Smart Export Guarantee — UW’s export rate is higher if you take energy plus at least two other UW services, and drops back to the standard rate if you don’t. UW lists solar, wind, hydro and similar generators; its pages don’t say how exports from a battery are treated.
Without a time-of-use tariff, a battery has less to gain from shifting when you buy electricity — see how tariffs affect what a battery can save.
If you want a battery as a UW customer
Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with Utility Warehouse before deciding.
Because Utility Warehouse doesn’t sell batteries, UW customers who want one either buy from an independent MCS-certified installer or apply for the Free Home Battery Scheme, where the battery is supplied and installed at no cost to eligible households and stays owned by the scheme owner (see who owns and maintains the battery).
If you buy a battery yourself, the key question with UW is tariff structure: outside the EV tariff there’s no cheaper off-peak window, so a battery has less to gain from shifting when you buy electricity. With solar, a battery can still store daytime generation for the evening. See electricity bill savings with a battery.
How UW’s bundle and Cashback Card work
Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with Utility Warehouse before deciding.
UW’s model rewards taking more of its services: its EV off-peak price and export rate both improve with the number of UW services you hold. Its Cashback Card also puts a percentage of your spending towards your bills. None of these is a battery product, but they’re worth factoring in if you’re comparing the running costs of owning a battery with UW against another supplier.
Does my energy supplier matter?
The scheme is open to private households, whether you own your home or rent privately (with your landlord’s approval before installation). Tell us who supplies your electricity in your application — your home’s suitability is then confirmed through the application and the home survey. Read who can apply or how the scheme works.

Utility Warehouse and home batteries: FAQs
Does Utility Warehouse sell batteries or solar panels?
Not when we checked. UW’s pages don’t offer batteries or solar for sale, installation or finance.
Is the Free Home Battery Scheme linked to Utility Warehouse?
No. It isn’t part of any UW bundle or partner offer, and Utility Warehouse doesn’t operate, fund or endorse it.
Can UW customers apply for the Free Home Battery Scheme?
Yes. Applying doesn’t affect your UW services or bundle. Tell us you’re with Utility Warehouse in the application.
Does Utility Warehouse have a battery tariff?
No. Its only time-of-use tariff is the EV tariff, for EV and plug-in hybrid owners with a smart meter.
Does UW’s bundle affect export payments?
Yes. UW pays a higher Smart Export Guarantee rate if you take energy plus at least two other UW services.
