ScottishPower Customers: Can You Get a Free Home Battery?

ScottishPower will sell you a battery — on its own or with solar — and rewards batteries through its export tariffs. It doesn’t currently offer a free battery. Here’s how its options work.

ScottishPower and home battery storage

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with ScottishPower before deciding.

ScottishPower sells and installs home batteries that can be fitted alongside new solar, alongside existing panels from any installer, or on their own — useful if you don’t have solar (see a battery without solar panels). They’re modular, starting from about 3kWh, with a manufacturer warranty and the manufacturer’s app. ScottishPower’s pages don’t name the battery brand.

When we checked, ScottishPower was running a time-limited discount on solar-and-battery packages, ending 5 October 2026.

Solar Saver and SmartGen export tariffs

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with ScottishPower before deciding.

Solar Saver is an import tariff for solar owners (from any installer) with a lower rate from 7pm to 9am — so a battery can top up overnight and the home can use cheaper electricity in the evening. It needs a single-rate smart meter sending half-hourly readings.

ScottishPower’s SmartGen export tariffs come in three tiers. The top tier, SmartGen Premium Plus, is reserved for ScottishPower customers whose panels and/or battery were installed by ScottishPower — a clear incentive to buy through them.

Power Saver and EV Optimise

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with ScottishPower before deciding.

ScottishPower doesn’t offer a battery-control tariff. Instead it rewards shifting usage: Power Saver gives discounted hours you choose each week, and Power Saver Plus credits you for shifting use during demand events. A battery can handle this shifting for you. EV Optimise and EV Saver cover EV charging and can’t be combined with Solar Saver. Read how tariffs affect what a battery can save.

Does my energy supplier matter?

The scheme is open to private households, whether you own your home or rent privately (with your landlord’s approval before installation). Tell us who supplies your electricity in your application — your home’s suitability is then confirmed through the application and the home survey. Read who can apply or how the scheme works.

Free Home Battery Scheme vs buying a battery

Free Home Battery Scheme

  • Battery supplied through the scheme
  • £0 battery installation for eligible households
  • Scheme owner keeps ownership of the battery
  • Scheme owner maintains, services and insures it
  • Scheme owner replaces it where required
  • Scheme owner handles end-of-life disposal or recycling
  • Up to £500 a year towards electricity bills, subject to scheme terms

Who owns the battery?

Buying your own battery

Buying a battery generally means you pay for it (upfront or on finance) and own the equipment, subject to the supplier or installer’s terms, warranty and tariff conditions.

ScottishPower sells modular batteries that can be fitted on their own or with solar. When we checked, prices including installation started from £2,910 for a standalone battery, or lower when bought with solar panels. You buy and own it.

Neither route is right for everyone: owning a battery gives you full control over it and any tariff you pair it with, while the scheme removes the upfront cost and ongoing responsibility.
