OVO Energy Customers and Free Home Batteries

OVO once ran a battery trial and still rewards battery owners through its export tariffs — but there’s no free OVO battery. Here’s the current picture, including what the E.ON deal might mean.

Whoever supplies your electricity, you may be able to apply for the Free Home Battery Scheme. Eligible private households can apply for a home battery installed at no cost, with up to £500 per year towards electricity bills, subject to scheme terms.

The Free Home Battery Scheme described on this website is not an OVO Energy scheme. Your electricity supplier is separate from the organisation providing and operating the battery programme.

OVO and home battery storage

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with OVO Energy before deciding.

OVO’s solar and battery pages now redirect to OVO Solar & Heating, which sells solar, batteries and heat pumps. Its own site states that OVO Solar & Heating is not the installer or supplier of the system: installs are carried out by a network of independent regional franchisees. Customers buy and own the equipment, and finance is offered.

What happened to OVO Battery Boost?

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with OVO Energy before deciding.

Battery Boost was a limited trial for customers with an OVO-installed GivEnergy battery and solar, letting the battery charge from the grid at a lower effective price. An OVO staff statement in February 2026 confirmed that it stopped being available on 1 February 2026. OVO’s heat pump tariff ended on the same date, so OVO currently has no battery-specific import tariff.

Export, Power Move and Charge Anytime

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with OVO Energy before deciding.

Where OVO does still reward batteries is exporting. Its top export rate, SEG Install Exclusive, pays more if OVO installed both your panels and a battery than if it installed panels only. SEG Beyond Exclusive pays OVO customers linked to its free Beyond loyalty scheme a higher rate than the standard SEG.

Power Move is a monthly prize draw for keeping weekday peak-time (5pm–7pm) use low — something a battery can do automatically. Charge Anytime is OVO’s smart EV-charging add-on; OVO’s page doesn’t say it applies to home batteries. Read how a home battery works for how peak-time shifting works.

OVO and the E.ON deal

Checked 30 September 2026. Tariffs and products change — check with OVO Energy before deciding.

In May 2026 E.ON agreed to buy OVO’s UK retail business, subject to regulatory approval. Until it completes, OVO and E.ON Next operate separately, and OVO’s products could change afterwards. OVO customers who came from SSE Energy Services are covered by this page too.

Does my energy supplier matter?

The scheme is open to private households, whether you own your home or rent privately (with your landlord’s approval before installation). Tell us who supplies your electricity in your application — your home’s suitability is then confirmed through the application and the home survey. Read who can apply or how the scheme works.

Free Home Battery Scheme vs buying a battery

Free Home Battery Scheme

  • Battery supplied through the scheme
  • £0 battery installation for eligible households
  • Scheme owner keeps ownership of the battery
  • Scheme owner maintains, services and insures it
  • Scheme owner replaces it where required
  • Scheme owner handles end-of-life disposal or recycling
  • Up to £500 a year towards electricity bills, subject to scheme terms

Who owns the battery?

Buying your own battery

Buying a battery generally means you pay for it (upfront or on finance) and own the equipment, subject to the supplier or installer’s terms, warranty and tariff conditions.

OVO Solar & Heating sells batteries (Fox ESS and GivEnergy were listed when we checked) through independent regional franchisees — OVO says it isn’t the installer or supplier of the system. You buy the battery outright or on finance and own it.

Neither route is right for everyone: owning a battery gives you full control over it and any tariff you pair it with, while the scheme removes the upfront cost and ongoing responsibility.

Could your home qualify for a free battery?

OVO Energy and home batteries: FAQs

Does OVO offer a free battery?

We haven’t identified one. Its only battery trial, Battery Boost, closed on 1 February 2026, and OVO batteries are now sold through franchisees.

Is the Free Home Battery Scheme connected to OVO?

No. It isn’t a successor to Battery Boost, and neither OVO nor OVO Solar & Heating operates, funds or endorses it.

Can OVO customers apply for the Free Home Battery Scheme?

Yes — including while the E.ON deal is pending. Tell us in your application that OVO supplies you; your home’s suitability is confirmed through the survey.

Will the E.ON takeover of OVO affect batteries?

It may change OVO’s products once it completes, but the deal was still awaiting regulatory approval when we checked. It doesn’t affect whether you can apply for the Free Home Battery Scheme.

Does OVO pay more for exporting from a battery?

Its highest export rate is for customers whose panels and battery were both installed by OVO. It needs a smart meter, and a battery schematic if a battery is fitted.
