Applying, step by step

  1. Choose the right upgrade

Think about which upgrade would work best for your home — solar panels, a battery, a heat pump or another renewable system.

  2. Check for grants

See whether you could also get a grant, particularly if you are on a lower income. Heat pump grants can be used alongside the loan.

  3. Get a quote from an MCS-certified installer

Compare installation quotes. Some lenders only work with particular installers; others let you choose any MCS-certified installer.

  4. Compare the loan

Look at the total amount repayable, how long you will be repaying for and any monthly fees — not just the monthly payment.

  5. Apply

Submit your application to a participating lender or installer. The lender carries out its normal affordability, credit and eligibility checks.

  6. Keep your records

If your application is successful, keep your quote, finance agreement, invoice, proof of purchase and MCS certificate.

  7. Make the most of your upgrade

Check whether a smart energy tariff could help you get the most from your new system.

What to keep once your loan is agreed

  • your installation quote
  • the finance agreement
  • the invoice and proof of purchase
  • your MCS certificate

These show what was installed, by whom, and on what terms — useful if you ever need to raise a problem with the installation or the loan.
