Government Green Grants

The government green grants are no longer available. This post was updated 31/05/23. The government of the United Kingdom has introduced a variety of green grants to encourage 

households to employ renewable energy sources and increase energy efficiency. 

This guide provides an in-depth examination of these green grants, their eligibility requirements, and the numerous benefits they provide.

Previously, residents had access to the Green Homes Grant programme, which sought to increase the energy efficiency of their homes and reduce their monthly energy bills. 

Unfortunately, the programme stopped accepting applications on March 31, 2021, a year earlier than planned. It is essential to note that, despite the cancellation of this particular grant, other government grants for insulation and home enhancement are available year-round.

These grants predominantly assist low-income families or residents whose total annual household income, including benefits, is under £30,000. Nevertheless, some grants are also available for residences with Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings of D, E, F, or G.

Energy Performance Certificates

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) tells you how energy-efficient a property is. It would be best if you had an EPC  in England and Wales when you’re:

• selling a property
• renting out a property
• building a new property

You must order an EPC for potential buyers and tenants before you market your property to sell or rent.

In Scotland, it is not compulsory to have an EPC rating though there is talk of legislation changing this in the future.

An EPC contains:

• information about a property’s energy use and typical energy costs
• steps to improve a property’s energy efficiency and save money

An EPC gives a property an energy efficiency rating from A (best) to G (worst) and is valid for 10 years.

Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI): The RHI is a one-of-a-kind programme designed to cover the costs of installing and operating renewable heating systems over the 20-year span of the system. Payments are based on the estimated amount of heat your home requires.

The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) programme provides an incentive for the production of electricity from renewable sources. Participants are compensated for generating green electricity, surplus electricity is sold back to the grid, and electricity bills are reduced.

ECO4 Scheme: The ECO4 grant is intended to assist householders in making their homes more thermally efficient or reducing their fuel costs; it is ideal for those receiving benefits or allowances. Local Authority Eligibility Flexibility (LA Flex) is a programme that helps householders who do not receive government assistance but have a limited budget. You can access funds for the ECO4 scheme through Consumer Rights.
