When something goes wrong, half the battle is knowing who can actually help.
This is a plain guide to the main independent bodies, regulators and charities
that support consumers across the UK — what each one does, and when to turn to
it. Most offer free help, and none should ever charge you to make a complaint.

Advice and support

For free, confidential help with almost any problem, start with
Citizens Advice. For
money and pensions guidance, see
MoneyHelper; for housing,
Shelter.

Regulators and ombudsmen

If a company won’t put things right, an ombudsman can rule on your complaint
for free — the
Financial Ombudsman Service
for money, and the sector regulators
Ofgem (energy),
Ofwat and the
Consumer Council for Water. To take a claim to court, see
HM Courts & Tribunals Service,
and to report fraud,
Action Fraud.
