Ofgem is the independent regulator for gas and electricity markets in Great
Britain. It licenses energy suppliers, sets and reviews the
energy price cap, and makes the rules that protect consumers
— including support for vulnerable customers and the process when a supplier
goes bust.

What it does — and doesn’t

Ofgem sets the standards suppliers must meet, but it does not resolve
individual complaints. If you have a dispute with your supplier, you complain
to the supplier first and then, after 8 weeks or a deadlock letter, take it to
the free Energy Ombudsman — not Ofgem.

When to turn to it

Ofgem’s website is the authoritative place to understand the price cap, your
rights as an energy customer, and schemes like the Warm Home Discount and the
Great British Insulation Scheme.
