Over the past few years, our team at Consumer Rights CIC has collaborated with residents of Flintshire to address two crucial goals: lowering energy costs and contributing to the UK’s carbon emission reduction efforts. By promoting energy efficiency measures and sustainable practices, we’ve helped Flintshire households make their homes more environmentally friendly while simultaneously reducing their energy expenses. This initiative aligns with Flintshire County Council’s commitment to tackling climate change and improving the energy efficiency of homes across the region.
We are dedicated to helping Flintshire residents receive the funding they are eligible for, with both the Great British Insulation Scheme and ECO4 (backed by LA Flex) accessible to eligible homes. The goal of these programs is to enhance the energy efficiency of households around the county by implementing various energy-saving techniques like insulation and heating system improvements.
So how and why do we do this?
To assist the UK government in its goal of achieving Net Zero emissions, ECO4 and comparable subsidies have been launched. We at Consumer Rights are dedicated to supporting this endeavour.
Homes in the Flintshire area have an average Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of 67, or band D. This is in line with Wales’ avergafe EPC score of 67, which is the average. An energy efficiency rating of at least band E on the EPC Register is required for private rental houses in Flintshire.
Properties rated F or G may not be legally rented out, unless there is a valid exemption.
Consumer Rights CIC have been actively helping Flintshire people access government-backed programs like ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme in order to raise the EPC rating of their homes.
Flintshire’s housing stock includes a mix of property types, such as semi-detached houses, terraced homes, detached properties, and apartments. The area features both older and newer constructions, with some properties dating back to traditional periods and others built more recently. For example, there are modern developments like newer detached homes, while older properties include character cottages and traditional semi-detached houses.
Retrofitting older properties in Flintshire to increase energy efficiency can be challenging due to their construction methods and materials.
EPC Ratings for Flintshire
- C and above (good energy efficiency): Approximately 35% of properties in Flintshire achieve an EPC rating of A, B, or C, which is below the Welsh average of 40%. These homes are considered energy-efficient but may still benefit from further upgrades to improve their performance.
- D (okay average efficiency): The most common EPC rating in Flintshire is likely band D, aligning with the Welsh national average. The median EPC score for Wales is 67, which falls into band D. Many homes in this category are older properties with standard insulation and heating systems but could become more energy-efficient with targeted improvements.
- E (poor efficiency): A significant number of properties in Flintshire likely have an E rating, indicating poor energy efficiency and higher energy bills. This is supported by the fact that many homes in Flintshire lack adequate insulation, contributing to higher energy costs.
- F-G (very poor efficiency): While specific percentages for Flintshire are not provided, some properties fall into the F or G categories, indicating very poor energy efficiency. These homes typically require significant upgrades to meet current energy standards and are likely to face the highest energy bills.
A property needs to have an EPC rating of D or lower in order to qualify for government support. A significant number of homes in the area may satisfy this first qualifying requirement for energy efficiency improvement initiatives, since only 35% of dwellings in Flintshire receive an A-C grade.
